Antique Firearms Seminar:

"The History of Firearms and their Uses"

October 3, 2002
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

JR LaRue of Cody, Wyoming with two guns from the monumental (8,500 guns) Stembridge Gun Rental Collection from Glendale, California.

The Colt and Winchester were used by John Wayne in the movie "True Grit".

Nationally renowned firearms specialist, J.R. LaRue of Cody, Wyoming, will be making a presentation on the history of firearms. J.R., a current resident of Cody, Wyoming, was the former department head of firearms at the James D. Julia Auction Company and now an expert consultant for the same division. He is a lifelong collector and dealer in antique firearms, and retired several years ago from the U.S. Air Force. He established a successful firearms store in Portsmouth New Hampshire, and ran it for many years before coming to work for Julia's.

Now, semi-retired, J.R. not only serves as a consultant for Julia's firearm division, but also as an expert appraiser and an unofficial consultant for the Cody Firearms Museum of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center of Cody, WY. His current business takes him all over the United States, and a few years ago, he was called upon by Stembridge Gun Rentals, the world's largest leasor of antique firearms, of Glendale, California, to write an appraisal for their collection. The company had an inventory of about 8,500 antique and modern firearms, all of which, over the past 80 or so years, had been leased out to various movie studios and were used in literally every movie which had a firearm in it. The inventory consisted of thousands of legitimate antique firearms, many of which had been carried by famous movie stars such as John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Tom Mix, the crew of Bonanza, Paladin, Gunsmoke, etc., as well as more modern movies right up through 1999. This vast appraisal took J.R. and his wife, Diana, literally months to complete and included millions of dollars worth of firearms. As a consultant for Julia's, J.R. travels throughout North America examining important collections and is also one of our main expert catalogers. He also flies back to Maine just prior to the firearms auctions to assist in the auction production.

J.R.'s expansive knowledge in the firearms area begins with the very earliest of firearms up to the modern-day items. His expertise and his greatest strength however, is in the area of 19th century firearms and 20th century high-grade firearms; whether they be Winchesters, Colts, high-grade shotguns or important collectible hunting and target rifles. Over the years, J.R. has proven himself to be a walking encyclopedia on antique firearms, their history and uses. His lecture on the history of firearms will certainly be a most interesting and informative one.

The presentation will be accompanied by illustrations and examples of various firearms and J.R. will be available for free firearms and accessories appraisals immediately after his presentation. In addition, there will be various rare and important firearms on exhibit that will be offered in Julia's antique firearms auction of October 7th, 8th & 9th, which will be conducted in Manchester, New Hampshire. This sale will be one of the most significant firearms auctions to be held on the east coast in many, many years, and is projected to gross in excess of $3 million. Refreshments will be offered. Attendees may call in advance to reserve a seat, but R.S.V.P. is not required.

Beginning with the year 2002, Julia's auction house has instituted a lecture series, which coincides with each of their major auctions throughout the year. The lecture features a discussion on some of the categories of things to be offered in the upcoming auction, and offers an opportunity to examine first hand, a vast array of rare, and sometimes museum quality items, which will be soon offered at auction. The free lecture series with combined free appraisal has been a tremendous success with all who have attended.
