695. IMPORTANT AND HISTORICAL 18TH CENTURY POWDER HORN- DATED 1775, MINUTEMAN. This large 18th century horn with a simple carved nozzle has the most interesting inlaid horn panel on the wood butt which reads "1775 Frederick Van Dyke Somrset N. J. MinuitMAN". According to the New Jersey archives of Revolutionary War personnel, Van Dyke did serve in the Revolutionary War. We are told that very few Minuitmen came from New Jersey, and most of these entered the war in the latter part of 1775. The horn with a simple-carved nozzle retains fragmented portions of the original leather strap. The wood plug in the butt end is affixed by large head brass tacks that are obvious 19th century replacements. The plug was originally secured with small pegs as is the normal case with an 18th century horn, and one such peg is still apparent under the leather strap. It is apparent that the brass tacks were added later at the very spots that the wooden plugs were. The small horn panel is affixed in the wood butt by what appear to be small brass brads. The horn was collected some 40-50 years ago by a New York collector who has long since deceased. The horn, together with a collection of Brown Bess Muskets, was consigned to this auction by the heir. SIZE: 18" on the curve. The butt is approximately 3-1/2" in diameter. CONDITION: Structurally sound with great old patina. What appears to be the original leather carrying strap is in pieces and very fragile. 4-43785 (1,000-4,000)

A large percentage of this printed material deals with the life and times of General Sickles. Also accompanying is a large frame of burl walnut containing two photographs of Crawford, his autograph, a sharpshooter metal and a photograph of his store in New Mexico. There is an additional frame of photographs of General Sickles and the three corps badges he served under. Additionally accompanying is a copy of a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle as having an octagon barrel, set trigger, and being shipped on May 25, 1875 with 309 other arms. The book appears to be intact with a loose spine and several loose pages, missing 1-1/4" of the spine covering. The frames and photographs and copies of photographs, are very good. 4-43210 JL434 (20,000-50,000)

711. DELUXE ENGRAVED BULLARD SPORTING RIFLE PRESENTED TO BUFFALO BILL. CAL.: .40-90. Wonderful and rare deluxe Bullard rifle with 28" octagon barrel, Rocky Mountain front sight and Winchester 73-style semi-buckhorn rear sight, full magazine, with highly figured deluxe checkered forearm and buttstock with "S" shaped grip and Bullard Repeating Arms Co. hard rubber buttplate having an elk head in the center. The left side of the receiver is engraved with foliate arabesque patterns having punch dot background and a light engraved border line with the sideplate having an engraved riband which is inscribed: "PRESENTED TO / Col. Wm F. Cody / BY THE / BULLARD REPEATING ARMS CO." The right side of the receiver is covered with about 50% foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background. The balance of the receiver and dust cover have light border decorations. There are more border decorations at the chamber and muzzle ends of the barrel. There is also a small, highly-detailed raised silver inlaid buffalo head on the tang behind the hammer. NOTE: This rifle, until August 2001, was on display in the Buffalo Bill Museum, Buffalo Bill Historic Center, Cody, WY. No visible SN. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. The barrel retains about 95% thinning blue with scattered pin points of surface rust and one or two larger spots and a small cleaned area on the left flat. The magazine tube retains blue in the sheltered areas, with the balance being a thin blue/gray patina. The forearm cap retains about 60% thin blue. The receiver retains 92-94% thinning bright blue, with a dull upper tang. The falling block retains about 80-85% bright, high polished blue. The hammer retains 50-60% strong casecolors turning brown to silver. The lever, with casecolors in sheltered areas, is mostly a light silver/brown patina. The wood is sound and retains 96-97% strong, bright original varnish, with a series of small bruises on the bottom of the forearm. The buttplate is fine, turning slightly chocolate and shows light wear at the heel. Brilliant, shiny bore. NOTE: It is well known and recorded that Buffalo Bill, during his lifetime, owned and was presented hundreds and probably thousands of firearms. This cataloger is familiar with a number of them and has heard of many more. However, this may be the only Bullard with Buffalo Bill connection known. It makes sense that the Bullard Repeating Arms Co., only in business from 1886 to 1890, at the height of Buffalo Bill's fame, would have sought his endorsement to their product. Buffalo Bill, at that time, had just completed his first European tour with his Wild West Show and was without question, the most recognized and well-known man in the world. It is also interesting to note that this rifle, in caliber .40-90, is not a listed caliber for Bullards. 4-44246 JL235 (75,000-200,000)

712. HISTORICAL BALLARD RIFLE PRESENTED TO PAWNEE BILL. CAL.: 22. This rifle bears an inscription engraved on the top three flats of the chamber area of the barrel "Presented to / MAJOR GORDEN LILLIE / from his friend J.J. Jones". Major Gordon Lillie was known by his stage name as Pawnee Bill and was a personal friend and one-time partner of Buffalo Bill in the touring Wild West Show. He was also the honorary Chief of the Pawnee Indian Nation. J.J. Jones was in fact Josephine Jones, a trick shot and sharpshooter, who historically gained fame as such, even before Annie Oakley. How the presentation came to pass is, at this time, unknown, but the engraving is unmistakably period to the rifle. The consignor states that this rifle has been in his family's possession, to his direct knowledge, since the early 1940s, when as a child he was told by his great-uncle that Major Gordon Lillie had given him the rifle, and that Lillie's wife May, had used it. He further states that the rifle has been passed down through his family to him and has never left their possession. SN 18329. CONDITION: About good. No original finish remains. The metal is a medium gray color with mottled silvered case colors on the receiver. The wood is sound and retains some original finish on the buttstock with the forearm showing more wear with nicks, dings and scratches. The bore is dark and severely eroded with traces of rifling. A wonderful opportunity to own a one of a kind, historic rifle. 4-42601 (10,000-20,000)

Both ranches are still operating today and the Coe family is very prominent and active in Cody society. The carving set is contained in a leather-bound wood case with gold washed hinges and latch. The lid is embossed in Old English script "T.D.S./1878". These are apparently the initials of the agent T. Steel. The clincher is a small old paper tag on the bottom with pen and ink writing that says "Car/TE". The TE Ranch is Buffalo Bill's Ranch that is still in operation. CONDITION: Overall, very good. The steel parts of the knife and fork retain a grayish metal color with scattered discoloration. The handles each have a longitudinal crack and age lines. 720 COLT 1878 DA REVOLVER WITH BUFFALO BILL INSCRIPTION. CAL.: .45 Boxer. Nickel finish, 7-1/2" barrel with blued trigger and hammer, ivory grips and a lanyard loop in the butt. The revolver has about 75% coverage foliate arabesque scroll engraving with usual marking on top of the barrel and where the caliber marking is normally found on the side of the barrel there is a long oval panel inscribed "Buffalo Bill's Wild West." The backstrap is engraved "* Hon. Wm F. Cody * / London." The top of the backstrap, behind the hammer, has a crown with the initials "VR." After careful examination, it has been determined that the arabesque pattern engraving is old American engraving, possibly of the period of the revolver, as is the barrel panel and backstrap inscription. The crown and "VR," however, are by another hand and possibly a later date. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated June 13, 2001, indicating that this revolver was shipped August 30, 1880, as a .45 Colt with nickel finish and rubber grips to Hartley & Graham, New York, NY in a shipment of 20 guns. The date of shipment certain lends plausibility to this revolver having been presented to Buffalo Bill by a friend or admirer during a visit to New York, and then the crown and "VR" addition made after his 1883 visit to England. Also accompanied by a modern felt-lined wooden box. SN 2840. CONDITION: Very good. Retains 65-75% original nickel with areas of light brown patina where the nickel has flaked away. The hammer and trigger retain 40-50% niter blue, turning brown. The grips have a wonderful yellow patina with numerous age lines and fit the frame very well. Strong, bright bore, slightly dark in the grooves. 4-43223 JL237 (20,000-40,000)

It has uncheckered wood with a straight stock and crescent steel buttplate with trap. It is accompanied by a Winchester Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle as having been shipped with 17 other rifles on March 30, 1887 to order #16933. It also has a beautifully worked bearskin dogsled scabbard with sealskin lining, hand-stitched with trade tassel decoration, trade bead rosettes with what appear to be RCMP tunic buttons of silver with caribou heads and an arrow. It has cartridge loops that contain five .38WCF rounds and three large copper conchos, two of which have different engraving, but the same center mark of "NWC." and the third one with a third style of engraving with the center marked "HB" (Hudson Bay Company?) The top end of the outside of the scabbard has a 4 3/4" diameter round leather medallion carved with maple leaves and the emblem of the Northwest Mounted Police and with what appears to be a brass NWMP crown. Also included is an early box for Winchester cartridges containing nine original .38WCF rounds. The box has a red label with green side tape marked for the Winchester Model 1873. Also included is a four-page typewritten resume of Potts' life and a small paperback booklet from the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta, Canada 1966 by Hugh A. Dempsey entitled "Jerry Potts/Plainsman", that details the life of Jeremy Potts. In addition, there is a mounted piece of paper which appears to be a sale bulletin of the original Antler's Bar of Anchorage, Alaska stating that a Winchester and dogsled case owned by famed Canadian scout Jerry Potts was legal to sell. Additional research has disclosed more mentions of Potts service to the NWMP on pages 27, 28 & 29 of the book "The Mounties, The History of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police" by Jim Lotz. All three detail approximately the same information. Also in the book "The Mounties..." is a picture of Potts holding what possibly is this 73 rifle. The left sideplate of the rifle is very lightly engraved "Official N.W.M.P./hired scout/Fort Benton" with an NWMP emblem and the date "1889" and the name "Jerry Potts" in a riband off to the side. On the left side of the buttstock are the connected initials "J.P." in small iron tacks. It is unlikely that Potts did any of this work himself, as he is reported to have been illiterate. He named his son "Blue Gun", probably after this gun. SN 231516 CONDITION: About good. No original finish remains. The metal has a light brown, cleaned patina with moderate rust pitting at various places. The left sideplate has been cleaned. 749. PAIR OF BELGIAN MADE TARGET PISTOLS PRESENTED PORFERIO DIAZ. CAL.: .44 Russian. The following lot is represented to have belonged to Porferio Diaz, who was a general in the Mexican army and later became president of Mexico from 1876 to 1880 and again from 1884 to 1910. Beautiful pair of pistols with 10-5/8" octagon barrels having matted rising ribs with tiny bead front sight and adjustable rear sight. Additionally accompanying is a letter dated November 12, 1992, by Herb Houze, authenticating this brace of pistols. He states the monogram is identical to Diaz' arms preserved in the Douglas arms collection of the Royal Military College of Canada. He further identifies them as appearing to be the same pair sold as Lot 200 in the sale of Lt. Col. James W. Flanagan by Parke-Bernet Galleries on April 21 & 22, 1944. He states that a note in the margin of this catalog indicates that this lot originally belonged to Walter Douglas, who purchased the Diaz collection in 1937. No SNs. The consignor states that he is aware of an identical set of pistols that were made for the President of Chile. CONDITION: The pistols are as new, probably unfired.
