201. ORNATE ENGRAVED AND SCULPTED PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE. No serial number. .52 cal., 32" octagonal barrel. The lock is completely covered with extremely fine scroll and vine engraving, with a dog chasing a stag in a forest scene in front of the hammer. The hammer is carved with a dragon head, including gold eyes and has engraving to match the lock. The left side plate is also engraved to match the lock and has a sculpted forest scene with three chamois. The upper tang is likewise engraved, with a sculpted scene of a standing stag and a reclining doe. The rear of the barrel is sculpted on both sides with raised vine and leaf patterns, culminating in a dragon’s head with the nipple in the dragon’s mouth on the hammer side, and a false nipple on the left side. The barrel is inlaid with gold "I.D. MOREITZ, SOHN in LEIPZIG." surrounded by lines in silver, gold and platinum. Each end of the border terminates in gold and silver flowers. The rear of the barrel is inlaid in gold "ENGL: GUSS: STAHL" at rear of the upper three flats. The stock is carved at the wrist with raised vines and leaves containing an auerhahn and squirrel on the right side. The left side carving, which extends all the way to the butt, has a raised carved hunter standing above a dead stag, holding a gun and blowing a hunting horn. The seated dog is looking over his shoulder in the direction that the hunter is looking. Similar vine and leaf engraving extends four inches in front of the triggerguard. The iron patchbox cover has a sculpted leaf border with a forest scene containing a stag and two does. The buttplate, triggerguard, key and swivel escutcheons, forearm tip, ramrod pipes and tip, are Coin silver and either sculpted on the large pieces, or engraved on the small. The iron sling button on the butt is engraved to match the carving on the stock. The front sling is missing. In addition to the sculpted vines on the triggerguard, it is inlaid with a sculpted gilt iron scene of a hunter with a gun leaning against a tree. The screw adjust tang side is present. CONDITION: Excellent overall. The brown on the barrel has some very light surface rust which could be removed without affecting the finish. The stock has a few minor dents and scratches and one long crack through the front escutcheon on the right side of the forearm. 4-42385 FS121 (8,000-12,000) 202. FLINTLOCK JAEGER. No serial number. .52 cal., 20-3/16" swamped octagonal barrel. The patch box cover is a replacement. The rear stock swivel is missing. The engravings on the various brass mountings do not match each other. CONDITION: Rust brown patina overall, with some live rust at the rear of the barrel and on the lock. Numerous cracks, dents, scratches and repairs on the wood, including much fill around the lockplate. The sling swivels on the triggerguard and forearm are replacements. 4-42391 (1,750-2,750) 203. FLINTLOCK JAEGER. No serial number. .54 cal., 17-3/4" slightly swamped octagonal barrel. No makers marks, probably Central European. The stock has been repaired with new wood and plastic wood near the buttplate. The rear half of the triggerguard has been replaced and brazed onto the original part. The bore is poor. The lock is functional. 4-42392 FS118 (1,000-2,000) |

| 224. EXCEPTIONALLY HISTORIC EARLY BRASS FRAME HENRY RIFLE INSCRIBED AS A GIFT FROM CAPTAIN JAMES WILLSON 12TH KENTUCKY CAVALRY TO HIS SURGEON MAJ. T.J. SWAN. The rifle is the early brass frame type ser. 1106 with a 24" iron barrel with integral magazine below. Brass receiver and frame, iron rear sight, hammer, trigger, lever and locking nut. Walnut shoulder stock with brass butt plate. On the right side of the receiver is inscribed: "Presented by / Capt. Jas. Willson / Co. M 12th Ky. Cav" within an engraved cloudburst-like decoration. On the left side of the receiver is inscribed: "Maj. T. J. Swan / Surg. 12th Ky. Cav" along with four decorative engraved arcs. CONDITION: Very good. The barrel has turned a pleasing plum brown color. The rear sight has been moved from the rear of the receiver to the barrel, one-inch forward of the frame. The receiver retains most of its untouched patina, except for areas around both inscriptions that have been lightly cleaned. The shoulder stock shows heavy wear with its edges worn and numerous dents and scratches. The tool compartment is empty. The gun functions well, but the bore is dark and dirty. Captain Willson had a colorful career with the 12th Kentucky Cavalry and was well-known for his personal offensive against Confederate guerrillas in Kentucky. There is, apparently, a documented incident where he outshot and killed seven Confederate guerillas near his home. O.F. Winchester used this incident to his great advantage in his advertising campaign. In addition, Willson’s remarkable feat convinced Kentucky authorities to arm Willson’s entire company with Henry’s. Captain Willson also had correspondence with the New Haven Arms Company regarding problems with the Henry rifle’s firing pin and magazine. A Henry rifle ser. no. 5952 is extant and is engraved an inscribed to Capt. James Willson (see photo and description on page 38 of The Winchester Book by George Madis). The above described gun, ser. no. 1106 is believed to have been the very gun used in Willson’s defense against the seven guerillas. Ser. no. 1106 was built sometime in either September or October of 1862. It is known that the incident took place shortly before the fall of 1863, since that is when Winchester incorporated it into his advertising. We believe that Willson later had inscribed and presented this very same gun to his surgeon. Indeed, the patina, engraving and handling marks on the gun seem to indicate this. The Henry ser. no. 5952 illustrated in The Winchester Book is very likely a rifle presented to him by Winchester in thanks for the special story that Winchester used to sell his rifles. We believe this for two reasons: ser. no. 5952 was not built until June 1864, long after the incident and the reference on the inscription "Capt. James Willson" was a rank not attained until after the incident. A truly special Henry with a wonderful history. 4-42381 CW53 (50,000-75,000) | |
